This morning, I sat with a founder who is about to create generational wealth. He’s terrified that his success will be his daughters' undoing.
It’s a valid fear. I’ve lived the "enabled" life. It led me to a multimillion-dollar mansion, followed by a total collapse into addiction. When the safety net was finally pulled away, I didn’t know how to fly—I only knew how to fall.
The difference is subtle but life-altering:
Enabling removes the obstacle, making the child weaker.
Empowering provides the boots and the map, making the child stronger.
As a modern-day explorer, I’ve learned that you can’t discover new continents from the back of a chauffeured car. You have to walk the ground yourself.
